Ramadan day 16 - boys need to do chores.

Boys needs to do chores as a way to release their energy, and also to give them accountability. Gone are the days where a boy would go out with his dad and hunt for food, so chores are the modern day version of hunting. Taking out the trash, shoveling snow, buying groceries, etc, are all things your boys should be doing. Cooking is a good skill to have too.

Ramadan day 15 - discipline with dignity.

We think discipline always requires a stick, or physical violence and loud voices.

That is not the prophetic example.

The Prophet ﷺ would always use his wisdom when correcting others. He would not single out the individual, but try to reason why they should or shouldn’t do something. If you try to discipline with harshness, you’re showing a lack of self control, and that same methodology will be passed down to your children.

Like father, like son.

If you keep yourself calm, and correct in a calm manner, they are more likely to internalize what you said. Yelling only causes people to panic, and their stressed emotional state is not suited to retain information well.

You might be tired, hungry, and feel weaker in Ramadan due to fasting, but don’t let that incite you into a rage.

Even worse - the next time your kids mess up, they won’t tell you because they know how you react. They need to know, without a shadow of a doubt, that you are there to help them, and there is NO ONE else on this planet that is looking out for their best interests.

Ramadan day 14 - who are your close friends?

You will be on the religion of your closest companions:

Abu Musa reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, the parable of good and bad company is that of a seller of musk and a blacksmith. The seller of musk will give you perfume, you will buy some, or you will notice a pleasant smell. As for the blacksmith, he will burn your clothes, or you will notice a bad smell.”

Sahih Bukhari 5534

You have to be selective in life with who you hang out with. You can’t just throw yourself or your children into any group without knowing who they are hanging out with. Even in Islamic schools, there is no guarantee that just by having them there, everything will be fine. I have heard myself back in my college days in the early 2000s, that Islamic schools had to deal with teenage pregnancy cases.

The beauty of Islam is we have an organic way of filtering out the type of people we should be hanging out with. Men are required to attend the Masjid, and as you attend regularly, you will meet people there, get to know them, and then families can get to know one another. Of course you can still get mixed with bad influences, but generally this method will lead to positive friendships that are based on common religious values and not based on what animes you watch.

Ramadan day 13 - a normal amount of anxiety is normal.

Many people are trying to achieve Jannah in this Dunya, and they will fail miserably. People with material wealth and status put on a public show, but they have mental health issues that are torturing them. Just pick any celebrity story and you’ll see.

Medication isn’t the answer, even though it can dull your mind to the stresses of life. Most people don’t need to be on these meds, but what they’re really missing is the spiritual component. How many spiritual people, even if they’re not on Islam, feel and act so much better even if they are living in poverty?

If you want to find comfort and ease, remembrance of Allah is the way:

The Thunder (13:28)

those who believe and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah. Surely in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort.

Do you know the best gift of Jannah? It is to see Allah with your own eyes. The one who created you, sustained you, and showered you with countless blessings. Just as seeing Allah is the best gift of Jannah, the worst punishment of Hell is being denied the ability to see Allah because, surely if you don’t believe in Him, why would you have the pleasure of seeing Him subhana wata'aalah?

Ramadan day 12 - gender boundaries are fading, and your compliance to Islamic rules will isolate you.

One of the many dangers of public schools and modern day society is free mixing between the genders. It is completely beyond what you would consider normal interactions between men and women.

One high school boy even called his school, “The Fitna capital.”

Most modern “Muslim” weddings are also Fitna capital, with free mixing, provocative and dazzling clothing, and looks maxxing to an extreme level, compounded by music and selfies and photos posted online because, why not share the wealth and adornment with the rest of the world?!

Will we simply throw in the towel instead of pushing back? Will we boycott Muslim weddings unless people change their ways? Sure it takes more time and effort to do things the right way, but isn’t that part of the test from Allah?
